Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) Requirements
Before You Start
Students do not need a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) to begin the classroom portion of Driver’s Education.
Important Requirement
Students must have a TIP card in order to:
- Take the state digital test
- Complete the 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training
Documents Required to Obtain a TIP Card
To receive a TIP card, the following documents are required:
1. Proof of Identity
All minors must provide:
- An original or state certified birth certificate
2. Proof of Residency
- A document showing your current address (must be valid and up to date)
3. Social Security Verification
One of the following is required:
- Social Security card
- W-2 form
- Printout from the Social Security Administration confirming your number
If no Social Security Number has been issued:
- A letter from the Social Security Administration must be provided
- The number may also be given verbally when applicable
4. Parent or Guardian Authorization
- A custodial parent or legal guardian must sign the application
- The parent or guardian must present valid identification
- Legal guardians must also provide court documentation verifying guardianship
- If joint custody exists, only the domiciliary parent may sign
5. Additional Identification
One of the following is required:
- Photo work ID
- High school diploma
- Insurance card
- Or another valid form of identification

The Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) does NOT accept photocopies of any documents.

The Story Behind Harvey's Academy of Driving
Harvey’s Academy of Driving was established in the summer of 2011 by two dedicated educators, Coach Harvey and Mrs. Harvey, who saw a gap and answered the call. When high quality driver’s education was no longer available in the local school district, they chose faith over fear and stepped forward to serve their community. What started with just a handful of students has grown into a trusted and respected program committed to preparing young drivers for success on the road and in life.
Today, after 15 years of service across Southwest Louisiana, Harvey’s Academy of Driving has empowered more than 10,000 students with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to drive safely and responsibly. With the addition of twin business partners, Paytleigh and Ronnie III, the academy continues to build on its legacy of excellence while expanding its impact into the Iowa, Jennings, and Broussard areas.

Driver's Training & Courses Description
WHAT DRIVER’S EDUCATION COURSE DO YOU NEED?
At Harvey’s Academy of Driving, we don’t just teach students how to drive, we prepare confident, responsible drivers for life. Our state approved programs combine classroom instruction and behind the wheel training to ensure every student is fully equipped for real world driving success.
In Louisiana, driver’s education is more than a requirement, it is a foundation. That is why we focus on skill building, awareness, and confidence, not just passing a test. Learning to drive is not a race. It is a process, and we are here to guide you every mile of the way.
TEEN DRIVER EDUCATION
Ages 14 years 9 months to 17 years old
Teen drivers are required by the state of Louisiana to complete:
- 30 hours of classroom instruction
- 8 hours of behind the wheel training
Students will gain hands on knowledge and real world understanding of:
- Louisiana traffic laws and roadway rules
- Defensive driving strategies
- Hazard awareness and safe decision making
- Proper vehicle control in everyday driving situations
This program builds the confidence and discipline young drivers need to start their driving journey the right way.
ADULT DRIVER EDUCATION
Age 18 and older
For adults earning their first license, Louisiana requires:
- 6 hour pre-licensing classroom course
- 8 hours of behind the wheel instruction
This course is designed to be focused, efficient, and supportive, helping adult learners quickly build confidence while mastering essential driving skills in a safe, structured environment.
ROAD SKILLS TEST REQUIREMENT
Before applying for a Louisiana driver’s license, all drivers must successfully complete a road skills test.
This evaluation measures your ability to:
- Safely back up and park
- Properly yield and merge into traffic
- Change lanes with awareness and control
- Demonstrate safe, confident vehicle operation
REFRESHER & BEHIND THE WHEEL TRAINING
Whether you are newly licensed or just need a confidence boost, we offer personalized one on one behind the wheel training for drivers of all ages.
Our certified instructors provide patient, hands on instruction in dual control vehicles, focusing on:
